Preface
In 1983, we published The Basics Book of Data Communications. Since then, the book has developed quite a following. What began as an attempt to make the subject of data communications both accessible and enjoyable has become something of an industry primer. That
book, in turn, gave birth to a family of more specialized basics books on topics ranging from V.32 to ISDN.
Now, for the first time, we've substantially updated and revised the original Basics Book. Much that is here will be familiar. The first seven chapters of the book cover pretty much the same ground as its predecessor, but with some modification and shifts in emphasis to reflect recent trends and industry changes. The last five chapters comprise mostly new material. Here you will find discussions of digital services, X.25 networking, network topologies (including LAN and MAN), and network management, as well as some new applications.
To reflect all these changes, we've given the book a new name—The Basics Book of Information Networking. As before, we've kept the tone light and the information, well, basic. That's how you've liked it over the years, and we send it on its current journey in the hope that it will continue to please the readers it is designed to serve.
