INTRODUCTION
This part of the book is called the Introduction. That is to say, having read or at least dipped into the rest of its pages, you have now turned to this bit to see what possible claims are being made for the book's right to exist. (Only publishers believe people read books by starting at the front.)
Well, this is a collection of funny medical stories. Some are old, some are new, some are borrowed, and some will appeal to those with a more clinical interest in bodily functions. Our many contributors come from both ends of the stethoscope, and while some of their stories are jokes, others are true—at least, they say they are true. I was surprised to receive accounts of one or two incidents, which friends of mine had told me were personal experiences, from another source entirely—the same stories, but featuring a different cast of characters. It's hard to believe that the story about the Coca-Cola bottle ever really happened—certainly not more than once—but in the other version I have heard, the bottle in question contained a well-known product which is dark, Irish and stout. And, on the subject of Eamonn Andrews, can we really believe that his doctor gives him regular check-ups by watching his TV performances? If so, is it a case of 'This Is Your Life In Their Hands'?
