INTRODUCTION
LL the stories—told and re-told in many versions, familiar in their outline to everyone—which our great-grandparents told to their children are the stories in which our little ones delight. They have come to be known as nursery tales, because it is while children are still in the nursery that they, through them, are introduced to the wonderland of romance; and the annals of that wonderland have a truth transcending the truth of history; they take their place in the memory and directly or indirectly have their lessons, which may become blurred but are never forgotten.
