Walking to lunch on this sweltering Monday, Leigh Michaels fantasized longingly about cool mountain streams and cold ocean breakers, and when she neared the entrance to the Memorial Union her pace quickened in anticipation of the air-conditioned comfort within. The building was usually on the chilly side of comfortable, just what she needed to counteract the muggy heat.
A vast gothic fantasy in white Indiana limestone, the Union was a hub of university activity, stretching for more than two blocks along Bloomington's Seventh Street. It housed, among other things, several restaurants. Leigh crossed the slate-floored lobby and mounted a long flight of marble steps to the mezzanine floor, then followed the maze of hallways that wound its way through the building as she made for the Commons.
