Introduction The Book of Books starting with the Torah - which according to tradition was given to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai in the year 2448 (1512 BCE) - is at the religious, national and social heart of the Jewish people. In the Torah, the people of Israel are commanded to keep Shabbat [the Sabbath], celebrate Rosh HaShanah [New Year], Yom HaKippurim [Day of Atonement], Shemini Atzeret [the eighth day of Sukkot] and to celebrate the three pilgrimage holidays - Sukkot, Pesach, and Shavuot [Feast of the Tabernacles, Passover, Pentecost].
