Preface The second edition of The Brief English Handbook has maintained the high standard of the first edition. The text is still an easy-to-use guide to standard American English and college writing. The organization is still straightforward, the design clear, the rules prominent and carefully indexed, and the coverage as thorough as a brief formát will allow. We added an eighth part ti tied "Manuscript Form, Business Letters, and Resume" and updated "Writing a Research Paper" (chapter 48) in order to conform to the current documentation style of the Modern Language Association. In "Writing a Research Paper," we alsó added examples of the American Psychological Association documentation style. We revised "Writing the Essay" (chapter 46) by concentrating on selecting a subject, narrowing a subject, and choosing a suitable tone. Finally, we expanded "Spelling" (chapter 40) by adding common spelling rules and a list of spelling demons. The rest of the revision comes under the title "polishing." We polished definitions, examples, and exercises. During revision, we never lost sight of our intent in the first edition: to simplify the task of looking for help in writing and revising. The handbook still begins with a review of the essentials of grammar before presenting sentence structure and punctuation. We alsó list grammar terms alphabetically in a glossary at the back of the book and meticulously cross-reference terms to their definitions throughout the book. Following the grammar review, we present several chapters on sentence errors, sentence clarity, and sentence variety, where we emphasize the common faults that plague so many Preface iii
