INTRODUCTION
I wrote The British Pub more than twenty years ago. Many things are diiFerent today. Then, pubs opened at lunchtime and in the evening; now they are open all day. Then, not many pubs liked children; now, many have a lovely, family atmosphere, with children's rooms and outdoor play areas. Then, often the only food was a bag of crisps or peanuts; now, many pubs are also very good restaurants.
This new version of The British Pub is a good chance to give you some extra information about pubs. But one thing is the same. Most people still go to the pub to drink beer and to chat. They chat about everything from sport to politics, from history to literature. In a pub, with a glass of beer, you can change the world.
It's thirsty work.
