PRELIMINARY NOTE
The original plan of Mr. L. R. King, who compiled this volume, has been carefully adhered to by the editor of this edition. In that plan any attempt at a discourse upon letter-writing was avoided so that the entire volume should be given up to actual postal communications.
The arrangement and sequence of letters have also been left much as originally planned.
" Mr." or " Esq." ?
One question has however frequently been asked, and it is held that it should be dealt with in this opening : That is, " When shall I use the phrase ' Esq.' instead of ' Mr. ? ' "
The editor wishes it were the custom to dispense with both terms and address persons and firms by their plain names, in the manner adhered to for many years by some of the well-known Quaker manufacturing houses. As however this book deals with customary rules an attempt is here made to explain the usual methods.
"Mr." is almost invariably used in business in the address on the envelope and the official commencement of the letter. As this book deals chiefly with commercial letters " Mr." is adhered to, practically throughout.
In social life " Esq." is used in most cases for the envelope and the official commencement, but even here
