IntroductionTo the Self-study StudentThe Cambridge CAE Course was designed with two kinds of students in mind-firstly, those studying for the CAE exam, and secondly, any advanced students of general English who wish to improve their overall command of the language and their communication skills in English. The CAE examination is often taken one or two years after the First Certificate in English examination or by students who are new to the Cambridge exam. This course is suitable for either group of students. It is possible to use the Self-study Student's Book either by working through it or by approaching it selectively according to your needs. You will benefit most from using this course if you are at a good upper intermediate level and beginning to achieve a certain proficiency in the language. What are the aims of this course? This course has five main aims:1to improve your all-round command and level of English2to familiarise you with the content and format of the CAE exam3to give you adequate practice in carrying out CAE exam tasks4to increase your confidence in your ability to learn and master English5to increase your awareness of how to improve your own language and make the most of your own learning styleWhat are the contents of the Self-study Student's book? The Self-study Student's book contains seven main parts:1Map of the Book2Starter unit3Units 1-154Revision Exam Practice {after Units 5,10 and 15)5Exam tips6Unit-by-unit Self-study Guide (incl. tapescripts, answer keys and notes)7CAE answer sheetsAll the listening recordings are contained in three accompanying cassettes. The Map of the book is designed to help you plan a learning syllabus and design a route through the materials in accordance with your particular needs. The Starter Unit is unlike the other units in that its focus is the content of the course as a whole (ways of learning, communication and the CAE exam). It serves as an introduction to each of the strands of the course. The three blocks of units (1-5,6-10, 11-15) develop particular features of the language, particular communication skills, approaches to different parts of the exam, and an awareness of ways of learning. Each unit is designed around a topic of general interest that could well be covered in the CAE exam.Revision Exam Practice units occur after each block of five units, and contain additional practice of the exam formats presented in the preceding five units. They are also based on the topics of these units. In this way they provide you with opportunities for revision, checking and consolidation. There is also a brief supplementary section at the end of the book called Exam tips which summarises the recommendations of the CAE Examination Reports produced by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).The Unit-by-unit Self-study Guide contains tapescripts for the listening activities, answer keys, and additional notes to help you understand exercises and keys as appropriate. These sometimes include background information on exam tasks or other features of the exam, language skills, grammar, cultural information, etc.How are the units in the Self-study Student's Book organised? Each of the units 1-5 contains three sections (Section A, Section B and Section C). Sections A and B contain a similar structure and focus. Each develops a different aspect of the topic of the unit, and contains a focus on reading, listening, speaking and/or writing, grammar and vocabulary. Activities on pronunciation, style, register and functions may also occur in these sections. Section B usually ends with a Vocabulary round up, which gives you opportunities to review the unit's key vocabulary items.
