PREFACE" there is no such thing as justice either in or out of court. In fact, the word cannot be defined.'' Clarence S. DarrowAt the very core of the American justice system a strong voice screams out for fundamental fairness and preservation of human rights, but the true course of justice is thv^^arted in many ways. For more than a half century I've defended hundreds of murder cases, with painful awareness of the haunting specter that an innocent man or woman may be convicted for a crime he or she did not commit. The traumatic effect of such eventuality is unbearable. There are many instances where providence intervened to reveal the innocence of the wrongfully convicted person, most likely after he or she has served a long, grueling prison term. The prosecution officials apologize. The ex-convict is free to pick up the pieces of his or her broken life. The story of Florida's Catch Me Killer puts the criminal justice system on trial impelling the reader to share my fears and frustrations as ex-policeman Robert Brier's trial attorney. The result is strictly a matter of judgment. The real names of the individuals in this book have been used wherever possible. Some names have been altered to protect those individuals from embarrassing exposure, but the details of the murder trial were faithfully and accurately recorded.I want to thank H. Allen Etling, of Lawyer's Literary Agency, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale for his invaluable assistance in molding and restructuring the story that had to be told. For that, and more, I am truly grateful.IJoseph A. Varon.',1' I .
