THE >i^OaLD OF THE CELT5Two to three thousand years ago, when we humans were still living in close proxirruty with nature, the tree calendar originated as a development of the stone circles which the Celts had discovered when they arrived in Western Europe. As 'conquerors', they probably adopted many of the traditions of the resident population. We do not know. Many conflicting legends have come down from an era which lies shrouded in the mists of time. But we have an inbuilt access to this past, for the complex mosaic of our irmer feelingsof fear and joy, strength and weakness, pleasure and sadness, sectirity and despair, and many other emotions^is as strong in us today as it was in the people of those times.
