INTRODUCTION'T^HIS reader has been prepared for childrenTfrom seven to nine years of age. It is not overburdened with difficult names, or confused by involved incidents, nor is the narrative interrupted by questions. The spontaneous questions put by little children themselves will provide ample opportunity for the teacher to explain and to supplement the subject-matter of the reader.The quaint phrasing and literary style of Longfellow^'s poem have been preserved as far as possible in the retelling of the story. It is surprising how readily even young children grasp and appreciate the poetic form. The aim has been to make this reader a book of real literary value, while giving also abundant material for reading.
