A PREFACE BOOK ON SEX, no matter what its approach to the problem may be, requires a justification and almost an apology nowadays. For some twenty years there has been a steady stream of books on sex and marriage flooding the book market, and there seems hardly any phase of the subject to be left untouched. But, being obliged in the course of his academic work to make an extensive study of the extant literature, the author felt with uneasiness the unsatisfactory character of many of these books. He realized with increasing clarity that much of the contradiction which existed between the views of the different writers and much of the vagueness and arbitrariness of the judgments passed and the advices given in these books was due to the lack of clear insight into the nature of sex. Simultaneously the author recognized that among the different philosophies of sex the view underlying the Bible was the only satisfactory one, because it offered the most comprehensive and most profound insight and was nowhere in conflict with the facts of experience. But strangely enough, hardly any of the modern writers on the subject seemed to have given sufficient thought to the Biblical idea of sex. This rediscovery of the Biblical view as well as the necessity of such an approach seemed to the author to justify the publication of this book.
