Hubert Sattler (1817-1904) View from the Danube to Esztergom History of the Museum The Christian Museum in Esztergom opened on 12 October 1875 as Hungary's third public museum after the National Museum and the National Picture Gallery, both in Budapest. Today it is one of the country's most important provinciai museums preserving both Hungárián and European items dating back several centuries. Its collection of fine arts is of European significance. The founder of the museum was Cardinal János Simor (1813-1891), pri~ mate of Hungary and archbishop of Esztergom, who donated his collection to the archdiocese with the intention of making the art of both ancient and more recent times better known as witnesses of history and educating contemporary taste, especially that of his priests.
