PREFACE IN 1945 I came to Woodbrooke, in the Selly Oak Colleges, to study the contribution of the churches to the Church. This book is the outcome of my studies. I take pleasure in acknowledging my great debt to my friend Geoffrey F. Nuttall, D.D., without whose encouragement the book would not have been begun, who fostered it throughout with invaluable help and criticism, and finally undertook the troublesome labour of proof-reading.
