Preface PURPOSE AND PRINCIPLES The College Writer's Reader, 1989 edition, is a book of readings, exercises, and advice that focuses on the general theme of college issues and the general tasks of expositoiy writing. This edition aims to continue the aims of the first edition and contains many new lively and largely contemporary essays in a variety of lengths, levels, and rhetorical modes. Selected from authors who range from classic essayists of the twentieth century (such as George Orwell and Bertrand Russell) to student writers from the kinds of courses the book aims to serve, the essays provide models for inquiry and expression. The readings are arranged both by the general tasks taught (such as writing on personal experience or writing for persuasion) and by general themes of interest to beginning college students. Those themes represent some of students' immediate personal, social, and long-term concerns—such as the college experience itself, issues of contemporary ethics, and careers beyond college. ORGANIZATION Since most students using this book wall have only recently arrived at their colleges and freshman English may be the only course they take in common with their classmates, the book is intended to serve as a part of their orientation to college life by asking basic questions like "What kind of a world have you entered?" "Where are you (and it) headed?" "What role does a writing course play in such purposes and plans?"
