Introduction Alexandre Dumas was born in 1802 in Villers-Cotterets in France. One of the most famous French writers, he wrote over 250 books which became popular all over the world before he died in 1870. Some of his more popular works are The Three Musketeers and The Man in the Iron Maslc. Another is The Count of Monte Crista. Printed in a French newspaper as a serial in eighteen sections, Dumas' epic adventure was very popular. The first part of the story was published on 28 August 1844, and the serial continued to run until January 15,1846. The Count of Monte Crista was inspired by the real story of a man who was wrongly accused of being a spy by three of his friends and sent to prison. Like the Count of Monte Cristo, the man took terrible revenge on those who had sent him to jail, including the one that had married his fiancée. Dumas was also inspired by the life of his father for his story; Thomas-Alexandre Dumas had served in Napoleon's army as a general. However, when he was captured by the enemy, he was left to suffer in prison for two years with Napoleon not doing anything to help him out. Edmond Dantes - the Count of Monte Cristo - also serves time in prison after he is betrayed by his friends and forgotten by his loved ones. The story leads the reader along the path of the hero's intricate plan of revenge, but, at the same time, it shows the importance of love, friendship and forgiveness, while warning readers about greed, betrayal and revenge. Several films, TV serials and even radio productions were based on Dumas' popular story. The earliest of these was a silent film which was made in 1908. Actors such as Richard Chamberlain and Gerard Depardieu played the famous part in different productions based on the book. A more recent adaptation in 2002 featured Guy Pearce and the beautiful Dagmara Dominczyk as Mercedes.
