I have decided to put on paper an account of what really happened in 1979—the year the world, as we knew it, fell apart.
I'm not sure anybody really cares any more, at least the people out here in California. They don't have to worry about starving or freezing to death like so many others. They have their horses, their vineyards, their church suppers. They would rather fish than think. Because they want to forget.
I cannot blame then!. But I do not choose to forget. I liked the old days when we still had airplanes and television and dry martinis and pornography. I admit it. Sure, there are lots of Latter-Day Saints around these days who claim that it was hedonists like myself who were ultimately to blame for what happened: that it was we who brought the wrath of God down upon us—us being the world in general and America in particular—because we were so hell-bent upon the pursuit of pleasure and money.
