Foreword
What an absolute honour! As I sat down to write the foreword for this classic, it brought back very real memories for me. The Cross and the Switchblade was the first book ever handed to me by a Christian. And it was the first book to show me that God is right here on the street, doing business in ordinary people's lives.
I had already begun to ask questions, and I was already searching for spiritual answers. But nobody understood me. How could they? No one had ever walked in my shoes. No one knew the difficulties I faced. Christianity reminded me of a middle-class, well-to-do, organized conspiracy. No Christian had approached me while I was in the courtroom. Not one had tried to talk to me when I was doing my gear. None had tried to help me when I was skint and didn't know where my next meal was coming from.
But all that changed when a Canadian evangelist became concerned for my welfare and gave me a copy of the book you're holding. The Cross and the Switchblade was just what I needed to encourage me in my new-found faith. It sorted my head out, and it showed me that God will go to incredible lengths to reach incredible nutters like me. Was I the only one with an amazing story of God's love? No! God has been transforming lives daily across the world since time began.
Nicky Cruz was somebody I could relate to. His story may have happened before I was born, yet it had the hallmark of the underground world I was living in. The gangs were the same, the struggle to survive in a world of have's and have not's was the same, the violence was the same, and the drugs were the same. Whatever caused this guy to take a serious look at God was bugging me, for his story was close enough to mine to challenge me. He fought against the truth of Jesus Christ, yet the love and consistency of one man - David Wilkerson -showed through his confusion. Would it do the same for me?
