PREFACE.
The historj- of the Hungarian nation, is rich in noble events, and even richer in sanguinary conflicts. The immense sufferings that Fate has imposed iipon her, have been made endurable only by some lofty Meal hovering ever before the nation's eyes — culture, humanity, faith, and especially freedom.
Has this nation had any mission in the world's history? Let us try to answer this vitally important question.
Human civilization during the last two thousand years, has been furthered by Europe. The spokes of the huge wheel of evolution were the spirits of the ancient Greco-Roman, Norse-Saxon, Ural-Altaic, Slav and Islam peoples. In this whirlpool on the borders of North and South, East and West, stands Hungary, which for the last thousand years, has endeavoured to protect the safety of Europe, and to promote the prosperity of the Danubian Basin. These efforts pervade the v/hole history of Hungary, wherein they are inscribed in indelible characters.
