Why, one may ask, give so much importance to an individual, when so many millions of unknown soldiers and civilians, most of them innocent, perished?The toll taken by the adventure of Nazism of the German people alone was tremendous. Official West Germap statistics record 4,192,000 German war dead; American estimates go up to 9 million. Soviet historians, basing themselves on German documents that fell into Russian hands, arrive at a similar figure: 9 million dead (not including the victims among the civilian population). Be that as it may, in terms of quantity we are concerned in this text with a single person only, and his death.
