Introduction
The American edition of The Diary of Jack the Ripper has been divided into three parts: Part One: The Discovery and The Investigation; Part Two: The Diary; Part Three: The Debate. Part One follows Shirley Harrison's narrative as she and her team compare what is known historically about both Jack the Ripper and James Maybrick (the man identified by the Diary as Jack the Ripper) to the contents of the Diary, and as they consult various experts in order to test its authenticity. Part Two presents a facsimile of the Diary along with a transcript for readability. Part Three includes an essay ("Is the Diary Genuine?") by the book's British publisher, Robert Smith; a report by documents expert Kenneth W. Rendell that concludes the Diary is fraudulent; and a rebuttal by Robert Smith to that report.
