PrefaceThe Grail is a personal quest. Few who seek it may find it. It is not a treasure hunt, but an exploration of self. The duty is control of the body, then a search for the secrets of creation.There are millions of paths to the Grail. If we ever reach the end of the road, we will see it in the shape of our experiences on the way. While there is only one Maker of our world, that One may appear in as many forms as nature does. Otherwise, there would hardly be so many religions claiming to know the sole method of approaching the One. The quest for the Grail is the parable of all of our lonely looking for the divine.Yet there is a geography of the Grail. While the endeavour of this book is to present the first complete history of the Grail, I would also try to demonstrate some of the ways to its discovery. The craft on this voyage, which the Grail romances called the Ship of Solomon, has two sails - Belief and Evidence. The wind must blow fair on both for those who seek to steer their right passage.I will show many places and many things and many symbols of the Grail. They are signs that indicate the path to each pilgrim. They are pointers to the individual, who must tread or ride or navigate a lonely course towards the One.The story will become personal to me. Once upon a time, I found the holy chalice carved on tombstones in Scotland. They led me on to the fate of the Knights Templar, named by two of the medieval poets as the keepers of the Grail. They also led me to the history of my own family with the name of St Clair or Sancto Claro, the Latin for 'holy light'. The
