Peter was woken in the night by a terrible bang. The whole house shook as if a giant were beating at it with the flat of his hand. Peter sat up in bed holding his breath. He expected to see the wall shudder and break open. Then he heard the bawling and shrieking and he knew it was just the wind . . . but such a wind! It shook the house as if the air was really a solid thing.
He ran to the window. There was no rain or clouds. He could see the dusty moon and strange stars shining dully. The sky was full of shapes. The air was hot and dry. His throat and nose were dried up.
