Note In the tables which follow, where there is a dash the figure is nil or negligible; "na" denotes that the figure is not available. Figures do not necessarily add exactly to totals because of "rounding" and those for latest years are provisional in somé cases. Figures shown for calendar years are the totals or averages for those years unless otherwise specified. On pages 114-139 country populations refer to mid-year, and city populations refer mainly to mid or end-year. Population of cities generally include surrounding suburbs. "Tonnes" means metric tons throughout; on pages 81 -101 US 'short' tons are used. Crop production figures on pages 4o and 114-139 are for harvest years referred to the calendar year in which the entire harvest or the buik of the harvest took place; for livestock, reference is made to the month and year of enumeration, or to the year ending September of the year stated. Rice refers to paddy rice, coffee to green coffee and cocoa to cocoa beans. $ means US dollár, unless otherwise specified. Monetary statistics, where changed from national currencies to L sterling or $, have, unless otherwise specified, been converted at the average par value for the relevant year; where no par value exists, or where it applied for part of a year, the most appropriate average rate is used (see page 48 for average rates of EC countries, and page 103 for average rates of somé other main countries). On pages 114-139 gold is valued at SDR 35 per ounce in figures for international liquidity. The term biliion, where used on pages 81 -101, refers to a thousand millión. Exports and imports refer, unless otherwise specified, to trade in goods only; exports are valued fob, and imports cif unless otherwise specified.
