PREFACE
The English Duden has been adapted from the German Duden Bildwörterbuch published in 1958, and, like its original, groups by subjects words which can be represented pictorially. A first edition of The English Duden was adapted from the Duden Bildwörterbuch of 1936, but since then the vocabulary of almost every subject which these books covered has undergone so great a change that a complete revision of both editions was necessary. The revised Duden Bildwörterbuch was published in 1958 and its success has encouraged the compilation of this companion volume. Here, as in the German edition, the words are grouped by their subject-matter into 368 sections, each with a picture and a word list. The table of contents on page 6, divided into fifteen main headings, lists all the 368 plates and their numbers, while the indexes at the back of the book give after each word the reference number of the word itself and the number of the plate in which it appears. The English index (pp. D 1-112) includes in alphabetical order all the words in the lists accompanying the plates. The German index (pp. E1-128) is reproduced from the Duden Bildwörterbuch. Thus to identify a German or English word the user should look it up in the appropriate index which will refer him to the picture. On the other hand, by referring directly to the pictures and their word-lists unknown objects can be named or the complete vocabulary of a particular subject can be found. By comparing The English Duden with the Duden Bildwörterbuch (the numbering of pictures and words is identical in both books), a translation from English into German can be obtained. The English Duden can thus serve three purposes. It can stand alone as an English glossary, it can provide a translation from German to English, and, in conjunction with the Duden Bildwörterbuch, it will give an English - German translation for each word.
