Introduction
Invited to supply an introduction to this latest exposé of the habitat of an undoubtedly endangered species, my first thought was that it would be great fian. My second was that it would be impossible. English gentlemen simply do not have mistresses. Edward VII? He was at least three-quarters Hun, and certainly not a gentleman. Edward VIII? Marginally less of a Hun simply by dint of having been over here for longer but considered by many to be an effeminate bounder - fancy wearing your top hat at the wrong angle when out with the Quorn. Lloyd George? Common little Welshman, of course he doesn't count; especially since he sought to buy himself into the upper classes by selling titles to other non-gentlemen. Bertrand Russell is somewhat more promising material, what with poor Mr Whitehead knowing all about it (a third party suffering always makes it much more fun), but although undoubtedly of gentlemanly birth, Russell was an intellectual and thus deeply suspect to other English gendemen. Indeed, his voracious love life with Mrs Whitehead came about while they were burning the candle at both ends over Principia Mathematica.
