This book is based on the International Symposium about The Enlargement ofthe EU toward Central Europe and the Role of the Japanese Economy in 120thAnniversary of Hosei University in Tokyo, 2000. Budapest University of Eco-nomics and Hosei University enjoyed to cooperate joint-research Project throughthe Institute of Comparative Studies of Economics, Faculty of Economics andFaculty of Social Sciences in Hosei University and Faculty of World Economy inBudapest University of Economics during 1996-1999.We held about more than 10 research presentations before the conference, andafter that we invited most important economists, political and social scientists ofEast and Central Europe, the U.S. and Japan to the Conference. We are convinced that it offers many important points about the TransitionEconomy, Political and International Relations in the Post-Cold War and Transi-tion Era after 1989. Especially we can show some important aspects and similar-ity between Japan and East Central Europe on Transitional Economy and Poli-tics.The papers focus on two major topics: on the enlargement of the EuropeanUnion toward Central Europe and on the role of the Japanese economy in theeconomy of Central Europe. These topics have been placed in the broadercontext of global social, political and economic issues including some majormilitary (NATO enlargement) and nationality problems too. The scholars out-line the most characteristic features of political, social and economic reform inCentral Europe. They raise the issues of the problems and prospects of Russianeconomic reform. Dealing with the role of the Japanese economy four scholarsdevote their entire attention to the advance of the Japanese overseas market intoCentral Europe and the economic influence of Japan. They also examine therole played by multinational corporations in this region.
