Introduetion This publication presents the documentation of the second conference on the European dimension in education organised by the Zentrum fíir Europáische Bildung der Europáischen Bewegung. The starting point was the first conference held in May 1990 in Mainz with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Science and the state of Rhineland Palatinate. The core of the conference was the EC ministers' Resolution of 1988, which for the first time provided a detailed consensus of 12 European governments concerning the European dimension in education and the contribution that teaching and education should make to the unification of Europe. A small group of those who had already been closely involved with this theme beforehand felt it was time to invite the groups that are or should be concerned with imparting the European dimension in schools and education to assess the current situation. One of the basic principles was that the groups of experts should be mixed. Not only history and possibly social studies and economics teachers, but alsó teachers in languages and the arts, participants from universities, publishers and authors of teaching materials were invited to take part in a generál exchange in the hope that a cross-linking of activities in the various fields might ensue and develop. The conference in May 1990 was advertised on a nationwide basis (in 11 federal states), and was joined at the last minute by a representative of the East Germán Ministry of Education, who was considered at the time like an exotic flower, fascinating and yet rather remote. The discussions were oriented towards the situation in the Federal Republic. The participants of the first conference were agreed that after the first "stocktaking", this kind of exchange should be continued. Thus, proceeding from the results in Mainz, it was planned to focus in the second conference rather more closely on the implementation of the European dimension in teacher training.
