The European Journal of Psychotherapy, Counselling Health emerges from several beginnings. The first is the lack of a refereed journal which might develop conversations about psychotherapy, counselling, and health, and the relationship between them. We consider it is important not necessarily to start with distinctions between counselling, psychotherapy and indeed psychoanalysis, but instead to look at how through 'the talking cure' we can help those who are suffering. A second reason for the journal is the fact that so many well-intentioned professionals, be they doctors, nurses or others involved in activities supplementary to medicine, are providing various forms of individual and group therapy with little training, and sometimes with supervisors whose training is similarly limited.
A further influence in the development of this journal has been a new, growing sense of 'Europe' as a cultural identity, not only in terms of political union but also in terms of continental thinking, and its distinctive implications for practice. (Our logo is designed to indicate the importance of both Greek and Hebraic influences). However, this is an International Journal, examining appropriate and inappropriate developments of European thinking world-wide.
The journal attempts to address a broad spectrum of professional counsellors, psychotherapists and health care workers, and a wide range of theoretical orientations. We hope that it will appeal to people who wish both to examine the implications of different theoretical orientations for helping others, and to interest themselves in the multiple problematics of counselling/psychotherapy as a means to health. A further aim is that the European Journal of Psychotherapy, Counselling & Health will be of value to counsellors and psychotherapists outside of those working solely in health care settings. We hope the content of the first edition gives an indication of our selection criteria.
