LENIN IN POVOLZHYE The Childhood, Youth and Early Years of the Revolutionary Activities of Vladimír Ilyich Lenin The name of Vladimír Ilyich Lenin is dear to all mankind. The Soviet people all over the world are eager to know as much as possible 1 about Lenin's life. They want to know how he grew and was brought up in the family, how he studied at the gymnasium and at Kazán University, how he became a revolutionary, a wole-hearted fighter 2 for the people's happiness. Various historical documents give us the possibility3 to recall the pages relating to childhood, youth and revolutionary activities of our great leader. Vladimír Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin) was born on April 10 (22), 1870, in the town of Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk) which stands on the banks of the Volga. Vladimír Ilyich's father, Ilya Nikolayevich Ulyanov, was a teacher of physics and mathematics and later an inspector of public schools in Simbirsk Gubernia. Vladimír Ilyich's mother, Maria Alexandrovna, was the daughter of a doctor. She was an educated woman and had very advanced ideas for her time. She passed her examinations without attending lectures4 and received her teacher's diploma. Maria Alexandrovna was a woman of great capacity 5.
