Foreword
Acupuncture is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over the past 2500 years medical scholars in every age have contributed to the development and refinement of the art of acupuncture in China.
During his three visits to China Giovanni Maciocia studied acupuncture conscientiously with Chinese doctors and teachers. He combined and adapted what he learned in China to Western conditions and successfully treated a large number of patients. He has also overcome language barriers to read Chinese medical classics. He spent many years studying and teaching Chinese Medicine in order to develop it for the benefit of patients and students. This spirit is highly appreciated by all those who know him.
His book "The Foundations of Chinese Medicine" is based on his many years of experience in practising and teaching Chinese Medicine. It is detailed in its contents, it adapts the theory of Chinese Medicine to a Western medical practice and is solidly based on the ancient Chinese classics. His book is unique in so far as it combines a rigorous scholarship with his wealth of clinical experience. It will be invaluable not only to students as a textbook, but also to acupuncturists and herbalists as a rich source of clinical information.
