Preface
A high-powered businessman once said, "Fortunately, ľll never have to worry about being depressed. I've never experienced it be-cause my personality is not bent that way." About two years later this man became a patient at our clinic . . . his diagnosis—major dépression, acute episode. In the time following his bold statement he had experienced a series of losses that emotionally weighed him down as never before. Upon completion of his treatment he recalled his earlier words and said, "If someone like me could become depressed, it could happen to anyone."
How correct this man was! Dépression does not play favorites. You may be an introvert or extrovert, socially active or shy, youthful or elderly, maie or female, wealthy or poor, white-collar or blue-collar, religious or secular. Whatever your distinction, you can also become depressed. What is more, any person you know is likewise fair game.
As practitioners in the field of psychiatry and counseling, we each ceased being surprised years ago at how commonly dépression can invade the lives of the patients who come to our clinic. We try to be sensitive to the fact that most of these people—like the businessman—never thought they would be laid low by this problém. They naturally question: "How could this happen to me? Is there a way out?"
We are very staunch in the conviction that dépression does not have to be terminal. It is not so mysterious that it defies explanations and solutions. If you are a depressed person, proceed with hope.
