OF course The Fur Person was a real, not an imaginary, cat. He, Brusque Voice (myself), and Gentle Voice (Judy Matlack) lived together for many years in Cambridge, Massachusetts. All this was a long time ago, so, of course, Tom Jones is no longer alive. But he had a long, happy time on earth and now he is, I am glad to say, becoming immortal as a literary personage. Only the other day I received a carefully printed letter telling me, "This is the best book I have read." The writer was nine years old, and I was gratified. There has been considerable underground murmuring because Tom Jones was out of print. Now he will be in circulation again and discovered by a new generation of readers. I hope some grandmothers will read The Fur Person aloud, for it was meant to be; it was meant to be a book for whole families to enjoy as well as "the fervent lovers and austere scholars" whom Baudelaire called the particular friends of cats.
