PUBLISHER'S NOTEThe Mammoth Book of Modem Crime Stories was originally published in hardback as The Best of Winter's Crimes, Volumes 1 and 2. Winter's Crimes have been published annually by Macmillan London Ltd. since 1969, containing the best of the year's crime stories. This collection was made by the distinguished editor, George Hardinge, who founded the series and edited all but six of the volumes. In his introduction to the two volume edition, he describes the genesis of the series: T owe many debts, one of them (once again) to my friend Julian Symons. At the very start he acted as an unpaid and more or less unthanked adviser: the concept of the Winter's Crimes series was worked out with his help in the bar at the Charing Cross Hotel many years ago.'He goes on to describe the difficult process of choosing the stories: 'To make my choices I have re-read all of the one hundred and ninety-three stories that appeared in the annual volumes referred to above. Coming again to these stories I found myself in an absolute Aladdin's Cave of marvellous things. If I had really been the editor who sponsored and conjured so many wonderful gems of invention and craftsmanship into being, had I not something to be proud of?The real answer, I think, is luck: luck in having such support from an immense range of authors including many who have been and mostly still are personal friends. And already some of these friends who have had more than one story in the series have been pointing out to me, in the kindest possible way, that I have chosen the wrong one. They may well be right; these are subjective questions.Obviously all these stories have been published before, some more than once and in different media. But they have not been published together, and I am going to have the temerity to suggest that this is an absolutely stunning compendium of crime short stories: the author's names are a roll-call of distinction and success in crime-writing in the second half of the twentieth century, and in their inventions for the Winter's Crimes series they have often reached the height of their powers.I hope many readers new and old will come to share the huge pleasure I have derived from re-reading these stories.'
