THE CHALLENGEWhen I was invited by Gillette to produce a book on cricket and football with the principal aim of helping young players, I saw it not only as an intriguing prospect, but also as a challenge, for it is the fostering and stimulating of the young player of today which ultimately produces the great player of tomorrow. It may be, for example, that in a few years time a great player, looking nostalgically back through a distinguished career, will remember a piece of advice which has stood him in good stead, and which he found within the pages of this book. If that happens even once, then this book has fulfilled the purpose I had in mind.Sport today has become Universal and many countries have come a long way in a very short time by using new methods and varying techniques. This book, therefore, could only be contemporary by covering the broadest possible front. In the pages that follow, great players of the world give their views - a West Indian, a South African, an Argentinian, a Hungarian, yet all names known from one corner of the world to the other. How does a young West Indian become one of cricket's finest all-rounders, or a young Argentinian, who began by kicking orange peel, develop into the highest paid footballer in the world? Sobers and di Stefano tell their own story, as a shining example to be followed.Gillette, whose interest in sport is well enough known, have chosen an eminently worthwhile subject. I only hope that the finished product will, in some way or another, achieve its aim in lending valuable assistance to the young players of our two national games.Gordon Ross,Editor.
