THE LIFE AND WORK OF EDGÁR ALLAN POEEdgár ALIan Poe was born in Boston in 1809. His fatlier studied law but later became an actor. His mother was an aetress. Mr. and Mrs. Poe had three children. They were rather poor. When they died Edgár was only three years old. He was taken care of by Mr. Allan, a rich tobacco merchant from Richmond.Though Edgár was not legally adopted, he used his foster father's name as his middle one when he grew up. His foster parents took Edgár to England where he attended school and they alsó went to Francé with him. Mr. and Mrs. Alian rather spoiled the boy. When they returned to Richmond, Edgár began to study languages and literature át the University of Virginia. Unfortunately, he soon started drinking and gambling heavily. Again and again Mr. Allan helped him out of difficulties, but in the end he refused to give the young man any more money. Then Edgár quarelled with his foster father and had to leave the University of Virginia.He worked as a teacher at the military academy of West Point, wrote newspaper articles and was editor as well as publisher of several magazines, going from job to job.He got jobs easily enough, as he was very clever, but kept them only for a short time because of his heavy drinking and gambling, and so was never free of money troubles.After the death of his wife, whom he loved deeply,
