PrefaceThe Gateway book may be read as an introduction to the series, The Golden Road to English Literature. The pieces are, in general, easier than those in Book i of the series. They may therefore be useful to those who are interested in English Literature, but who find the vocabulary and structures of Book i rather too difficult. As in the other four books, each piece here has a short introduction to give some information about the writer, and to explain the situation. These introductions have been writtin in simple English, so that the reader can give most of his attention to the ideas and facts. The general level of vocabulary assumed as known is about 1500 words, which is rather below that of The Golden Road to English Literature, Book i.Each piece is followed by exercises. These are fairly simple, but we hope that they will help to bring out the meaning and the chief points of the passage that has been read. The period of literary history covered by the selection extends from the sixteenth century (Shakespeare's Julius Caesar) to our present age. Examples of prose, drama and poetry are given, as in the other books of the series.W. J. B. G. C. T.
