WHITELADIES is a very famous school, situated in the midst of beautiful scenery on one of the wildest stretches of coast in the United Kingdom. A mile away there is a small fishing town, but otherwise Whiteladies' position is isolated, and visiting teams, who come to play on the great playing-fields, arrive in motor charabancs, and are lavishly entertained; wherefore fixtures with Whiteladies are much sought after.
Like all girls' schools Whiteladies has its corps of Guides, but, because of its position on the coast, it also has a special corps of Sea Guides.
These last are a very crack corps. To be a member of the Sea Guides is equivalent to being a Colour in one of the school teams, and the position carries with it equal privileges. To become a Sea Guide, indeed, is far more difficult than to play for the First at cricket, hockey or lacrosse.^
To begin with, no girl is accepted under fourteen years of age. Then she has to be able to row, and sail, and handle a boat like an expert. She must be a first-rate diver and swimmer, with and without clothes. The tests to which an aspirant to the Sea Guides has to submit include diving into the sea fully dressed, and swimming a certain distance in a certain time. She must be an expert life-saver. She must be able to divest herself of her garments whilst in the water, and she must know all about first aid. And the rigid, inflexible law of the corps is that all water
