Editor's Foreword The cultivation of crops is rapidly becoming a highly organized and increasingly efficient branch of industry. In order to produce the amounts of food and other plánt products which are required by the growing world population, agriculturalists, horticulturalists and foresters are depending more and more on the results of scientific research. These are published in a large number of journals, somé of which are not readily available, and even with the help of the abstracting services it is not always easy to get the information required. The purpose of the Applied Botany Monographs is to bring together our knowledge of selected aspects of crop science for the benefit of growers, research workers, and those students who are being trained for careers in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. By drawing attention to gaps in our knowledge the monographs may alsó help to direct the course of future research towards areas where it is most needed. J. F.
