What is Sculpture?People have been creating sculpture for as long as human beings have been around. Sculpture is a part of our everyday lives.Paintings and SculptureSculptors take different materials, such as bronze, marble or wood, and shape them into likenesses of objects, people or events. Sculpture is in three dimensions (something with three or more sides). You can walk all the way around many sculptures and see them from different angles (see pages 24-6 and 34-5 for different views of the same sculptures). In comparison, paintings and drawings are only two dimensional (on a flat surface).Things to Think AboutA sculptor has to ask a great many questions before work can begin. Who is the sculpture for - one person or everybody? Where will the work stand - in a museum, church, inside, outside or in someone's home? Will it be in a well lit place or a dark place? What should it beThe Venus de Milo (see page 7) is a Greek marble statue of the goddess Aphrodite, the goddess of love. The subject matter and style of Greek sculpture has influenced artists for centuries.
