A great opportunity for victory had finally come!
At the General Headquarters, the Southern Region Map kept becoming out-of-date as the fighting situation changed rapidly. The general staff cadres had replaced the regional map with a 1:50,000 scale Sai G6n-Gia Dinh map and a 1:200,000 scale South Viet Nam Map, marked by green and red symbols representing the most recent positions of both sides on the principal battlefields.
Walking around the desk, observing the familiar maps from every angle,, I recalled the time I stood in front of the scale model of Dien Bien Phu, planning an attack on the enemy's entrenched fortifications. These two historic events happened more than 20 years apart, but felt similar. Both involved brainstorming for the final strategic battle. The ultimate goal of both was to attain victory at the minimum cost.
