Words of Greeting from Dr. Pál SCHMITT President of the Hungárián Olympic Committee Member of the International Olympic Committee T A he Hungárián Olympic Committee, which has over a century of venerable traditions to look back on, is sending off the most illustrious representatives of the Hungárián sport with optimistic expectations. We are confident that the Hungárián athletes will take part in the Games with poise and adhere to fair play. We believe that their conduct will consolidate understanding and peace among the nations and that their results will enhance the prestige of Hungary. Apart from two exceptions - Hungary was not invited in 1920 and Moscow ordered it with political motivations to boycott the event in 1984 - Hungárián golds have been saluted with the heartwarming tune of the Hungárián national anthem at every Summer Olympiad to date. What could be a more eloquent proof of Hungary 's glorious accomplishments than the 157 golds, 139 silvers and 162 bronzes. Let us hope that the Hungárián athletes will stand their ground in the noble contest among the pacesetting nations in a field where participating countries now number 205. The aspirations of the Hungárián Olympic Committee are the same as they were in the past. We expect all the Hungárián competitors to make the best performance of their lives in Beijing.
