PREFACEThe English department of the University of Szeged (formerly József Attila University) established its five-yearly conferences under the umbrella name "European Iconology East and West" in 1993. The original purpose to bring together East-Central European scholars with Western colleagues was vital in the years after die changing of the state socialist regimes in 1989-90. Since then this series has been established with an average of eighty participants, and the first conference was followed by thematic colloquia on the iconology of the fantastic, gender, and the fourth on law and order, commemorated in this volume. Based on each of these conferences, selected volumes with seventeen to twenty-five essays have been published. It is my pleasure to offer the selected essays of the Law and Order conference here, and I feel obliged to express my gratimde to my colleagues who have contributed to the creation of this publication. First of all, to Dr. Anna Kérchy, who took a lion's share in corresponding with the authors and shaping up the manuscripts. Then to Dr. Attila Kiss, who was instrumental in organizing die 2008 conference and in selecting die essays for publication. Patrick Alexander carefully read the papers as language editor, Dóra Szauter was tireless to typeset the manuscript and prepare die electronic offprints. Etelka Szőnyi, director ofJATEPress gave the final physical shape of die book, which could be published be the fiinancial help of the TAMOP program with the assistance of the European Union.Last, but not least, I would like to thank our authors for their liigh quality contributions, especially those, who have become returning participants of our conferences. Several names could be mentioned; here I would only like to highlight Professor Alison Saunders of Aberdeen, who is the absolute veteran of our events, not having missed one since the establishment of the series in 1993. She was one of the keynote speakers of the conference represented in this volume.Szeged, June 15, 2012György E. Szönyi
