FOREWORD TO THE 46th EDITION Since its inception, the purpose of the international who'S who has been to provide comprehensive information, often not available elsewhere, on men and women who have achieved international prominence. Each new edition is the result of a thorough revision of its predecessor. Daily records of changes to existing entries are maintained and the editors are constantly engaged in research directed towards the selection of new names. The book contains biographies of people from almost every country in the world and in almost every sphere of human activity. Computer-aided photo-typesetting has been used in the production of this edition. Over seven hundred new biographies have been added and many of the existing entries have been expanded. An obituary list of persons whose deaths have been noted since the preparation of the previous edition appears at the front of the book, immediately after the section on Reigning Royal Families. In entries from the People's Republic of China, the Pinyin system has been used in accordance with official Chinese policy. For the benefit of the reader, all entries in Pinyin have a cross-reference in the Wade-Giles system used previously. We would once again like to express our thanks to all those who, by completing questionnaires or by correcting proofs sent to them, have enabled us to bring our information up to date. We would particularly like to emphasize the necessity for proofs of entries to be returned to us without delay, since only in this way can we be certain that every entry is as accurate and as up to date as possible.
