EARLY YEARS Fanny and William Nightingale gave birth to her first daughter, Parthenope, in Naples the year after they were married - 1818. Mrs Nightingale, who was a fine society lady and adored parties and nightlife, had heard that the city of Florence was, at that time, the most fun-loving in Europe and so she could not resist. She persuaded her altogether more serious husband to hire a villa there and it was on May 12 1820, in this house that Fanny gave birth to her second daughter and
