About this book
The life of Jesus Christ has long been known as 'the greatest story ever told'; and this book is therefore as much for families as for children. The stories are written with an ear to their being read aloud together, though the design and colourful presentation of the book will also attract children who want to read it for themselves.
These forty-four short episodes make good bedtime reading, perhaps as part of a child's prayers; and with one story a day, the whole outline of the life of Jesus unfolds in a few weeks. Some of the events will already be familiar, but a regular reading links them together so that they are no longer isolated and unrelated incidents, but combine to present an accurate picture of Jesus Christ in his life on earth. Indeed, these stories have already proved popular beyond the family circle, in schools and Sunday schools and wherever -children like to hear stories read aloud.
A distinguishing mark of the book is the way it is rooted in the Bible, especially the Gospel of Luke. Imagination has been used, of course; but carefully controlled by what we know from the Gospels, by our knowledge of the time, and by established Christian tradition. No named characters have been invented and very little dialogue. The words of Jesus, in particular, are largely drawn from established translations of the Bible in common use. This account, therefore, although simplified and imaginatively presented, is still the authentic story as we have it in the Gospels, an essential part of every child's spiritual inheritance.
If families who begin with these stories will later go on to read the Gospels together, perhaps in a modern translation, that will be best of all.
