Long before men learned to write, they used speech sounds to talk to each other. Even today there are somé people who have a spoken language, but not a written language. There are no written languages, however, without speech. Oral language is primary. As you study pages like this one in your Language Laboratory, the subject matter of your science will be spoken English. And the name of the science is linguistics. In these laboratory sessions, you will learn something about the way your language works, the way you put words and sentences together. You will compare English with other languages and see how English changes and grows. It is important in the language lab to be able to test a group of words to find out if they make a sentence.
