Introduction: To the InstructorThe Macmillan Guide to Writing Research Pa-pers is designed primarily for use in freshman composition classes, but it has been made as inclusive as possible so that it can also be useful to students in their future courses. The coverage of various styles of documentation in Chapters 5 and 6 and the listings of reference works (pages 59-65 and 234-57) should be particularly helpful in any courses involving research. Although many students dispose of textbooks immediately after completing a course, as Naval Academy graduates fling their caps into the air, they should be encouraged to retain The Macmillan Guide for future use.The Writing ProossThe Macmillan Guide is adaptable to whatever degree of supervision you consider appropriate for a class. Students who have written research papers previously may need little classroom discussion of research techniques and can use this book on their own as a "self-pacing" reference, supplemented by individual consultations with you. If, on the other hand, your students need considérable explanation of research procedures, The Macmillan Guide follows the préparation of a paper from the search for a topic to the final proofreading and is organized in sections that can be assigned on a day-to-day basis. There is some danger that the word process and the step-by-step procedure of investigating and developing a topic may give students the impression that writing is a stereotyped sequence of mechanical steps. Each student should be encouraged to develop a personal but sensible and orderly method of writing a paper. Too many students approach a writing assignment in a haphazard manner, and following a systematic procedure in writing their research papers should make them better writ-ers and, perhaps, better students as well.
