Preface
Thrombolytic therapy has ushered in a new era in the management of myocardial infarction, but it is both the culminadon of many years of research and a stimulus to fresh approaches. New applications of old approaches, such as morbid anatomy, new diagnostic techniques, such as angioscopy and PET scanning, new adjuvant therapies, ai)d the overall strategies of management all require a critical evaluation.
The Bridsh Heart Foundation, recognizing that research in this area has reached an exciting point, organized an international conference in London in June 1989 which many ofthe leading workers in the field attended.
The first session dealt with the important progress in our understanding of the mechanisms involved in acute myocardial ischaemia, and the second with the newer diagnostic methods.
Although the place of thrombolysis in myocardial infarction is now assured, the conference addressed the many questions that remain to be answered. Furthermore, there is still uncertainty about the role of the various forms of adjuvant therapy — both medical and interventional — now available.
Finally, a look was taken into the future, and consideration given as to how advances in research could be translated into the most effective practice.
This volume contains the material presented at that conference and provides an overview of many of the most important topics in acute coronary disease today.
